Minutes
Parks & Recreation
September 5, 1996
Greger stated that Taubman said the Desoto side was
completely filled, and Taubman was not aware that the
overflow lot existed. Taubman said no one complained to him
about a parking problem, and people were coming and going
throughout the time there. Taubman said parking here was
not a huge problem, and Maplewood's is worse. Greger stated
he felt our current parking is not utilized, people are not
being notified of the parking available here and the posting
is inadequate. Greger stated he would like to see the
parking issue moved back at least one more year because we
have not proved there is a need for more parking.
Holm stated he has seen the City put forth the effort to
inform people of the additional parking through signage. He
stated that people are just not willing to do it, and park
in other areas. Holm felt the question was whether or not
we are willing to live with the existing parking problem on
weekends and nights when there are overlapping games.
Greger stated this is a reasonable approach to just say it
is not bad enough yet. Greger stated if we ticket people
they will move and then we can see how much parking is being
utilized and how much more is needed, if any. Greger stated
a paved lot may not be necessary either. Greger stated
possibly a class V, graded as needed would be sufficient as
opposed to a commercial grade parking lot with the price tag
to match.
Morelan gave a synopsis of why we prioritize the wish list.
He stated all departments of the City give a list of
priorities of items they would like to see done, and then
the amount of money that is available from the capital fund
will be matched with the needs of each group. He stated an
order of priority of each item is needed for this purpose.
Rajanen asked if guards in front of benches could be added
to the list for fields 3 and 4. Remerowski commented that
if the City replaces any items, an aspect to consider is
upgrading the item so that it represents the most safety
conscious item available for protection of all children.
Morelan agreed, and stated some fields are more safe than
others.
Johnson asked that the Thunder Bay backstop be added to the
wish list. Ables asked if the parking at Spooner Park
should be expanded. Morelan stated he felt it should, but
could be held off for one year. Johnson asked what
completion of Gervais Mill facilities would entail, and
suggested the parking off Edgerton should be improved.
Remerowski commented that putting gravel there should be
sufficient.
Ables asked about the old fire station being used as a
community room. Morelan responded that life safety and
handicapped issues are being addressed as part of the fire
3
