MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 7, 2009
Chair Fahey explained to the Quest for Power members that the Parks & Recreation Commission
does not make the final decision on whether a basketball court could be built in Thunder Bay
Park.
Morelan explained that this commission could make a recommendation to the Planning
Commission, and if approved, the request would be forwarded to the City Council for final
approval.
RONDEAU PARK
Slain asked what could be done to stop the visitors at this park from setting up tents and parking
on the streets. Morelan stated he would check into having no parking signs added to Jackson to
possibly prevent out-of-neighborhood people from using this neighborhood park. Maida asked if
this park and Thunder Bay Park could be patrolled more frequently. Morelan stated that we have
Ramsey County Sheriff patrol our streets and park areas now on a regular basis.
OLD
BUSINESS: NORTH/SOUTH TRAIL CONNECTION
Morelan reported the he, Bill Sanders, and Holly Larson of the National Park Service met with
the Parks Director from Ramsey County and the Parks Director of Maplewood. Morelan stated
there was an overall good response to approve and move the project forward and to possibly
acquire regional trail status.
Slain asked what the reasoning was in obtaining a regional status. Morelan replied that it could
possible provide the project with more grant money and the proposed pedestrian crossing over
Highway 36 will be very costly.
Morelan stated that this group will meet monthly through the end of the year and also plans to
meet with St. Jude sometime in the middle of June.
GRANT STATUS
Morelan stated that applying for grants would be a step to take later, once more finalization has
taken place.
