MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 4, 2009
Morelan went on to explain the event is held in the lower shelter area of Spooner Park and will be
held from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. The Park & Recreation Commissioners usually attend this event and
assist with making root beer floats. The Little Canada A&W has donated the root beer in the past
and small ice cream cups are purchased to give to all in attendance.
Morelan stated he would take care of ordering the clowns as he has done in previous years.
Flyers for this event will be made and distributed to local business by the conunissioneis.
Morelan stated the event will also be included on the Canadian Days event schedule, the website,
cable channel and La Petite newsletter. Commissioners have sold Canadian Days buttons at this
event in the past, also.
BASKETBALL COURT REQUEST FOR THUNDER BAY PARK
Morelan dishibuted a map of the Thunder Bay area highlighting the homes that had responded to
the survey taken by the Quest for Power group members. He stated there were 42 response
sheets provided with 35 included on the map. One was anon-resident, one was a duplicate
response (husband and wife both responded), one was an invalid address, one had no address and
three addresses were off the area map. 'T'here were 29 residents who were in favor and 6 were
against putting a basketball court in the Thunder Bay Park.
Sanders couunented that the negative responses were not closely impacted to the "hhunder Bay
Park and the property owners right next to the park either were not contacted or failed to respond
to the survey.
Chair Pahey asked what the conunission's next step would be to handle this basketball court
request. Morelan thought there was enough merit to seek the funding. The next step would be to
have a neighborhood meeting.
Sanders suggested that the commission design a plan to present at a future neighborhood
meeting. He thought it best to include the replacement of current playground equipment into the
plan. He could use an aerial map and place the proposed basketball court in the area suggested
by the commissioners. He stated the area southwest of the current play area is typically a wet
area with no drainage and bad soil. He thought that if the commissioners would like that area
there would be some prep work needed to build up that location.
Maida suggested the court be placed in the area where the current baseball backstop is located.
Slain commented that it should be placed more toward the center of the park and not close to any
residential area. Sauders suggested that the court should be visible from the street and centered
in the park as long as the low area is avoided.
