MINUTF,S
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 4, 2009
Morelan stated that the area west of the walking path is normally a wet area. Sullivan asked if
the backstop could be removed and a ball field be relocated within the park. Sanders commented
that he thought the ball field could be relocated in another area and that the basketball court be
placed around the area where the second base for the ball field is now.
Chair Pahey asked if this was a practical project that we should be recommending acid liked the
idea that the project was recommended to this commission by kids. Sanders thought the project
is one that should be pursued, especially if it includes the improvement of the current equipment
in the park.
Slain inquired as to the recommended size of the court. Sanders thought the size would normally
be 50' by 50', but it could be constructed smaller if desired. Slain also thought the height of the
hoop could be lowered to 9' high to deter older kids from invading the court. The age group
that would be ideal for the 9' height would be age 12 or under.
SteinerY recommended Sanders map out a couple different locations where the court could be
built for the commission to review at the next meeting. Sanders agreed to design the map with a
few location recommendations.
Maida stated if the court was built around the current baseball second base area that there would
still be ample park area for other sports.
Lohnaugh asked what the timeline would be for starting this project. Sanders thought next year
would be a good target if the budgeting could be approved fora 2010 construction. Morelair
thought if this commission put the Thunder Bay Park project as a top priority it could possibly be
approved in time for next year's budget.
Sullivan asked if there were other items needed for the park if the court was to be constructed
such as restrooms acid benches. Morelan thought benches would be useful, but a bathroom
would probably not be a consideration.
Slain questioned if the other property owners that did not respond to the Quest of Power's survey
should be contacted. Sanders and Morelan both thought it would be best to design a plan first
before approaching the neighborhood with a suggested meeting. Sullivan thought it would be a
good idea to also invite the Quest for Power members to the neighborhood meeting once a date
was set.
