STAFF REPORT
TO: Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Sierra Hietala, Recreation Coordinator
DATE:September 7, 2023
RE:Recreation Update
ACTION REQUESTED
Informational Update. No action is requested.
BACKGROUND
Events
Ice Cream Social/Movies in the Park: The annual Ice Cream Social was a huge success! We had
around 1,000 people in attendance who got to enjoy Culver’s ice cream, a Little Canada Fire
Department Fire Truck, live music, a ventriloquist, balloon twisters, airbrush tattoo artists, and
more! Thank you to the event sponsors, the Little Canada Recreation Association, Culver’s of
Little Canada, and the Little Canada Fire Department. Another thank you to all of our amazing
volunteers, especially our commissioners, Parks & Recreation Director, and mayor!
Due to an unexpected thunder and lightning storm, we have moved the date of Movies in the
Park to Thursday, September 21. This will be located at the Spooner Park Amphitheater and will
still be The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Mr. Egg Roll will be joining us with their fantastic lineup
of food, and staff will be running the concession stand. Thank you to our Movies in the Park
sponsor, Arko Companies.
Explore Little Canada: Get ready to visit both new and familiar trails through Little Canada each
week from September 12 - October 3. This year our highlighted trails will be in Gervais Mill, the
Waterworks Trail, Thunder Bay/Westwinds Trail, and Rondeau Park. Each walk will include fall
phenology (facts about the changing of the seasons) about things that can be seen from that
specific trail, as well as the history and current events of the area!
Little Canada Geocache Exploration: Visit our parks, find the caches, and win a fun prize!
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt that uses global positioning system (GPS) enabled
devices to allow participants to navigate a set of coordinates to attempt to locate a ‘geocache’.
Caches are hidden items that are camouflaged from the public’s view. Geocaching is a family-
friendly activity that can be enjoyed by expert or novice geocachers.
Residents can pick up a Geocache packet at City Hill or download it from the City website with
coordinates to each cache. Inside each cache location will be a log sheet and a secret code. Find
all caches to decode the secret location!
Cookies with Santa: Save the date for our annual holiday celebration- Cookies with Santa! Join
us December 2 from 1-3 PM at City Hall for picture with Santa, hot cocoa and cookies, and a
take-home craft! We will be needing volunteers, so if you are interested please contact staff.
