<br /> <br /> STAFF REPORT <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />TO: Parks & Recreation Commission <br /> <br />FROM: Laura Linehan, Community Relations Manager <br /> Sierra Hietala, Recreation Coordinator <br />Bill Dircks, Public Works Director <br /> <br />DATE: April 4, 2024 <br /> <br />RE: National Volunteer Week <br />ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED: <br />This is an update and discussion item only; no action is required. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br />In November 2023, Parks and Recreation staff and Community Relations staff discussed the idea <br />of hosting an event or program for National Volunteer Week, organized nationally by the Points <br />of Light Foundation. <br /> <br />In May 1990, the Points of Lights Foundation was founded as an independent, nonpartisan, <br />nonprofit organization. Points of Light coordinates National Volunteer Week and Global <br />Volunteer Month. This year, National Volunteer Week is April 21-27. <br /> <br />In recognition of National Volunteer Week, staff has organized several volunteer opportunities, <br />including park cleanups, park entrance sign planting projects, and the social media launch of the <br />city’s new adoption solutions program to “adopt-a-facility.” <br /> <br />Park clean-up opportunities <br />Park clean-up opportunities for residents, as outlined in Table 1 below, provide a mix of times to <br />accommodate various schedules.
