<br /> <br /> STAFF REPORT <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />TO: Parks & Recreation Commission <br /> <br />FROM: Laura Linehan, Community Relations Manager <br /> Sierra Hietala, Recreation Coordinator <br />Bill Dircks, Public Works Director <br /> <br />DATE: May 2, 2024 <br /> <br />RE: National Volunteer Week Recap <br />ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED: <br />This is an update and discussion item only; no action is required. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The City of Little Canada hosted several events for National Volunteer Week, including park <br />cleanup opportunities, a park entrance signage planting event, and a social media launch of the <br />adopt-a-facility program. <br /> <br />Table 1 outlines the cleanup opportunities. <br /> <br />Table 1 – Park clean-up opportunities <br />Monday - April 22 Wednesday - April 24 Friday - April 27 <br />Event Thunder Bay/Westwinds Park Spooner Park Lake Gervais Park <br />Time 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. <br />Event Pioneer Park Gervais Mill Park <br /> Time 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. <br /> <br />Number of volunteers for each event <br />• Thunder Bay/Westwinds Park – 4 volunteers <br />• Pioneer Park – 7 volunteers <br />• Spooner Park – 7 volunteers <br />• Gervais Mill Park – 5 volunteers <br />• Lake Gervais Park – canceled due to weather <br /> <br />Table 2 outlines the volunteering businesses, organizations, and commission volunteers and the <br />signs where the planting occurred. Each site also had a park maintenance staff member on-site to <br />help coordinate the planting as well. Prior to the event, signs were installed, plants were laid out <br />by location, mulch was purchased, and the area was dug and edged. Volunteers also spread <br />mulch. Parks Maintenance staff were critical to the success of the planting event. <br /> <br />
