MINUTES
PARKS & REC COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 2, 2023

2
Chair Horwath asked if there has been a consideration for Canadian Days and whether there
should be additional signage for that event.

The Parks & Rec Director confirmed that he has spoken with that group, and they would most
likely utilize additional signage for the event.

NEW BUSINESS: 2023 SUMMER FARMERS MARKET OVERVIEW
The Recreation Coordinator provided an overview of this year’s outdoor market which ran from
June 12th to October 9th. She estimated 150 to 350 people per market with an average of seven to
12 vendors per market. She provided details on the vendors and recommendations to slightly
increase the vendor fee. She also provided details on the fees/sponsorship, marketing, programs,
SNAP/EBT, Power of Produce, and 2022 market redemptions. She also reviewed some of the
goals for the next market season.

Commissioner Abruzzese stated that she shares this excitement and recognized that the
SNAP/EBT program came online just in the past couple of seasons and has been a great addition.

Chair Horwath commended the Recreation Coordinator for the great job she has done with the
market.

Commissioner Mui suggested a partnership opportunity with the schools to potentially promote
the market to students.

Commissioner Abruzzese stated that perhaps senior living facilities would be another good
marketing option.

Commissioner Williams noted that Vadnais Heights does not have a market and perhaps the
Little Canada market could be advertised in that community. She stated that perhaps there would
be an opportunity for a high school intern to assist at the booth. She also noted that a group of
volunteers could dress like vegetables in the parade to pass out flyers for the market. She noted
that perhaps market signs could be placed in the parks, along with direct mailings to all residents
at the beginning of the season.

Commissioner Mui asked if the vendor budget is used fully each year.

The Parks & Rec Director replied that the budget is used fully almost every year.

NEW BUSINESS: RECREATION COORDINATOR UPDATE
The Recreation Coordinator highlighted upcoming programming for adults and youth, as well as
upcoming community events.
