MINUTES
PARKS & REC COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 1, 2024

3

Commissioner Mui commented that the data is clear that there is use of the adult programing and
activities, and he has appreciated the City providing those services to adults and seniors.

Chair Horwath commented that gymnastics had a lot of interest but there was a challenge in
finding an instructor.

Commissioner Churcher commented that she does teach gymnastics and this position did not pay
enough to attract candidates as other instructor positions begin at a higher pay rate.

Commissioner Schletty commented he noticed a lot of REV Sports partnership programs for
spring and summer.

The City Administrator commented that there was an intentional partnership with REV Sports to
take the burden off the City for hiring and therefore they are trying to find the right balance. He
noted that the partnership provides more options that the City does not have to manage.

Commissioner Schletty noted that often younger children participate in the City parks
programing sports and after a number of years when they have built their skills, they often move
on to a club level for that sport.

Chair Horwath commented that it is important that there is access to programming, regardless of
where it comes from and therefore supports partnership opportunities. He recognized the variety
of offerings that Little Canada has.

Commissioner Mui recognized the work the Recreation Coordinator has done to implement new
programing opportunities. He noted that it has been less than two years since she began the adult
program offerings and those have been hugely successful.

The City Administrator noted the baseball basics offering and stated that perhaps there could be
a similar opportunity to offer that type of beginner programs for other sports.

RECREATION COORDINATOR UPDATE
The City Administrator noted that there is a written report included in the packet and provided a
brief overview. He stated that shelter and facility rentals for 2024 are now available online for
Little Canada residents. He noted that the snowshoeing events for this year thus far have been
canceled due to the lack of snow. He stated that the outdoor rinks have also been closed due to
the higher temperatures.

REPORTS FROM COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Owens commented that his daughters participated in the ice-skating classes and
enjoyed that.

Commissioner Mui stated that he is excited to see identity being created for each of the parks.
