MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
July 16, 2009
THUNDER I3AY PARK BASKETBALL COURT- Location Options
Sanders distributed three different aerial concept plans of proposed changes for Thunder Bay
Park to all in attendance. He stated that all three plans are recommending redoing the
existing play area with new equipment. Plan #1 and #2 keep the play area in the cun~ent
location, while Plan #3 proposes relocating it to the east of the current location.
Sanders caltinued to explain that Thunder Bay Park has an existing trail going north to south
that runs through the center of the park and a trail running east to west on the northern
boundary of the park. The park also has two Xcel towers and two sets of transmission lines.
It currently has a baseball field with no lines and a backstop located on the west side of the
park.
Concept Plan #1 would include the addition of a trail connection winding through the center
of the park and a basketball court constructed along that trail in the outfield area of the
baseball field.
Concept Plan #2 is similar to #1 except the basketball court would be located on the opposite
side of the current play area.
Concept Plan #3 proposes a circular trail to be constructed in the center of the park and
reconstructs the play area to the east side of the park. This plan also relocates the ball field
within the new circular trail and the basketball court to be constructed to the far west area of
the park. This plan would require a large amount of grading and drainage work and would
be more costly than the other two concepts.
There has been no more information from the group recommending the basketball court.
Morelan commented that he has had difficulty contacting the group's leader since school is
out for the summer.
Maida inquired about the upgrading of the park equipment. Sanders stated that it currently
meets the standard requirements, but the fact that the equipment is wood there is more
potential to encounter splinters. Morelan stated the equipment is also outdated and said the
equipment gets a lot of usage. Morelan stated that it is a neighborhood park and they have
removed a lot of buckthorn in the park area to give it more visibility.
After some discussion, the commission agreed that Concept Plan #1 was a well designed
plan. They liked that the basketball court would be constructed so it would be visible from
Thunder Bay Road and would sit on a little higher ground. It also would be placed a Little
further from the playground area and the cost was less than concept #2 that would require
more extensive soil correction.
Fahey asked what the priority of this project would be for immediate improvements.
Morelan stated that this park was priority #1 for play structure improvements. Morelan
suggested the commission decide on one concept plan to present to a neighborhood meeting.
