MINUTES
City Council
September 24, 1980
The City Clerk reported that the reason for the substantial increase is
that the police department is hiring an additional person to patrol
Little Canada and Vadnais Heights. Vadnais Heights will be sharing this
cost and they have approved their police protection budget for 1981.
Councilman Fahey questioned whether the City will receive better service
from the Sheriff's Department.
Councilman DeBace suggested that the Council call them in for a hearing
to discuss the poor job they are doing and the large increases in their
budget.
Mayor Hanson stated that he does not know whether the Sheriff's Department
is doing a good job or a bad job. Hanson stated there are probably some
good deputies and some bad ones.
The Council approved the 1981 police protection portion of the budget.
The City Clerk informed the Council that $12,005.00 is suggested as the
1981 budget for protective inspections. The Council approved this
portion of the budget.
Council approved the $300 budgeted for the Weed Inspector for 1981.
$4,000 is suggested as the budget for Animal Control in 1987. The City
Clerk reported that there have been very few complaints on animals in
the City recently. Council approved this portion of the budget.
$15,500 is suggested as the budget for street tights for 1981. This is
only a slight increase over the 1980 budget of $15,094.00.
Councilwoman Scalze stated that an additional street light is needed on
Schletty Drive. DeBace suggested that perhaps a couple of street lights
should be installed on Schletty Drive. DeBace also suggested that
Payne Avenue could use some street lights.
Council approved the street light portion of the 1981 budget.
The City Clerk has estimated the 1981 budget for the dumpster at $9,800.00.
Council approved this portion of the budget.
The 1981 estimated budget for the City Garage is $3,308.00. Councilman
Fahey suggested that perhaps this portion of the budget should be
increased for fencing and blacktopping that will be needed.
Councilman DeBace suggested that $5,000 should be added to this portion
of the budget.
Council approved this portion of the budget with a $5,000 increase bringing
it to $8,308.00.
Page -5-
