MINUTES
Gity Council
October 14, 1981
Mayor Hanson stated that he believes the City will have a fight on its
hands when the billboards in Little Canada have to go.
Hanson stated that he felt that the action taken against the sign at
Cherette's and Becker's was discriminatory. The Planner pointed out
that the Council placed a stipulation in the approval of the Vincent
Brass expansion that their sign must be removed.
Mr. Forsberg stated that that was a different situation as when Pepp~no's
came in for an expansion approval, the Council stepped on two different
businesses.
Mrs. Scalze stated that the Council is forcing Cherette's and Becker's
to place their signs on the marquee.
Mrs. Nardini asked if the signs in the windows were allowed at Becker's
under the sign ordinance. The Planner stated that under the ordinance
these signs were not allowed either.
The Planner suggested that the Council study the ordinance and see if
there are items they want removed from the ordinance. Mayor Hanson
suggested that the ordinance should not be enforced until the Council
studies it.
The City Clerk also stated that the 15 foot setback for signs in the
ordinance does not work. There are too many properties that would require
a variance. The C1erk suggested that a 10 foot setback would be better.
Mrs. Scalze commented that the City of Edina looks so nice because they
have a sign ordinance in force. Scalze commented that just because a
business has a sign up does not mean they will increase their business.
Scalze commented that the City must set some sort of guideline.
Mrs. Nardini introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION N0. 81-10-607 - REMOVING THE STIPULATION IN THE
FlPPROVAL OF THE EXPAPISION OF PEPPINO'S CALLING fOR THE
REMOVAL OF THE TWO SIGNS AT THE SFIOPPTNG CENTER
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Mrs. Scalze.
Ayes (4) Nardini, Scalze, Hanson, Forsberg.
Nayes (0).
Resolution declared adopted.
This resolution appears in Resolution Book No. 7, Page 394.
Building Mayor Hanson informed the Council that Mr. Larry Squires has submittecl his
Inspector letter of resignation as the City's building inspector. Mr. Squires offered
to stay on in that capacity until the City found a replacement.
Mrs. Scalze asked the Planner if he was a certified building inspector.
The Planner replied that he was, but he had no experience. The Planner
commented that he may put a proposal together fior this position.
Page -10-
