MINUTES <br />City Council <br />April 8, 1987 <br />Bingo Amaro replied that Crea did work at the hall but has not for several <br />(Cont.) months as her son was injured in an automobile accident. Crea is <br />still listed on the roster of employees, and Amaro indicated that <br />she would be welcomed back to work at LCCB when she is able to <br />return. <br />Mr. Fahey asked what functions the Minnesota Registry of Interpreters <br />of the Deaf perform. <br />Amaro replied that MRID teaches sign language to the hearing impared. <br />on a State-level basis. <br />Fahey asked what position Amaro held with MRID. <br />Amaro replied that he holds na position with MRID other than that of <br />gambling manager. <br />Fahey asked if MRID was a professiona1 association. <br />Mr. Ruben Latz, President of MRID, reported that the organization has <br />been in existence since 1971 and has 240 members. Latz reported that <br />MRID's members go to places such as Council meetings where the hearinq <br />impared might want access to public information. <br />Fahey asked who pays for these services. <br />Latz replied that they are paid for primarily through the educational <br />system or School District. If the services are provided in a medical <br />setting they might be paid for by Group Health, or Share, for example. <br />Fahey asked if MRID would provide a listing of interpreters to <br />individuals. <br />Latz replied that the Interpreters Referral Center does this. <br />Interpreters Referral Center is funded by United Way, State money, <br />and funds from the agency's own efforts. <br />Fahey asked if MRID could be called for a referral. <br />Latz replied that MRID has no office, and that the Referral Center <br />provides these services. Members of the MRID get referrals largely <br />from the Interpreters Referral Center. <br />Blesener asked what MRID does with the funds it receives from its <br />participation in LCCB. <br />Latz replied that it pays members' dues, provides public information, <br />training, public education on a state-wide basis. There is also a <br />national convention in Auqust and some of the money will be spent <br />sending its members to this convention. <br />Scalze asked what advertising MRID has done. <br />Page -18- <br />
