MINUTES
City Council
April 8, 1987
Bingo Sherman also reported that Servants of Mary began donating to the
(Cont.) Little Canada Recreation Association some time in 19II5.
Fahey again stated that he would not support renewal of Servants
of Mary's license until the matter raised by Little Sisters of the
Poor is resolved.
Sherman replied that Servants of Mary is not affiliated with the
Little Sisters. Sherman felt that the matter could be resolved by
redoing the Articles of Incorporation for Servants of Mary and
removing any reference to Little Sisters of the Poor.
Sherman also informed the Council that she was Gambling Manager for
Servants of Mary and that Servants of Mary does not have a Bingo
Manager. Sherman also reported that since the LCCB has rotated
the charities, Servants of Mary has not had pull-tabs since the
first of the year. When Servants of Mary sponsors the binoo occasion,
another charity sponsors the pull-tabs.
fahey stated that he is becoming more convinced that the City should
enact an ordinance regulating bingo.
Lois Blomberg appeared before the Council representing St. Joseph's
Society. Blomberg reported that she is the Gambling Manager and that
St. Joseph's has no Bingo Manager.
Blomberg also reported that St. Joseph's Society has donated
$215,000 to the Little Canada Recreation Association.
Blomberg noted that under the Articles of Incorporation for St.
Joseph's Society they could donate to any organization as long
as it was non-profit.
Blomberg also reported that a few weeks ago St. Joseph's Society
changed its name from St. Joseph's Society of the Little Sisters
of the Poor to St. Joseph's Society for Charity, Inc. Blomberg
reported that the By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation will be
amended as well.
Fahey suggested that following the meeting the Council and City
Attorney meet in closed session to discuss the matter involving
Mr. Ed Amaro and whether an additional hearing should be held
in view of the possible litigation in the event the City denies
renewal of MRID's license renewal and Mr. Amaro's participation
in the Ha11.
The City Attorney replied that a closed session would be proper
given the circumstances.
LaValle suggested that given the amount of issues that need to be
resolved, that the Council table action on the license renewals
until the April 22, 1987 Council meeting.
Page -23-
