MINUTES
City Council
Sept. 14, 1988
Citizens
League
Tax Report
Agenda
Addition
Little
Canada
Road
Bridge
Pr~oject
Flgenda
Addition
Adjourn
Agenda
Item No. 17
Scalze called the Counc~l's attention to the copy of the Citizens League
revised tax r•eport which places Little Canada as #2 in property taxes.
Scalze suggested that the City Auditor be given a copy of this r•eport.
The City Cler~k r•eported that he has forwar~ded a copy to the Auditor~.
Blesener• pointed out that the City of Little Canada property owners ar•e
paying approximately $50 to $60 mor~e in taxes on an aver•age $80,000 home
than are the property owner~s in other cities the r~eport compared with.
Blesener felt that Little Canada pr•operty owners wer•e being taken and
felt that this inequity should be pointed out to the County Assessor's
Office. Blesener felt that Little Canada should be placed in proper
balance with the rest of the municipalities in Ramsey County and
School District #623.
Scalze agreed that it seems that Little Canada is paying more per mill
than other cities Little Canada is being compared to.
Fahey suggested that the City Clerk obtain a written explanation from the
County Assessor•'s Office and ask what steps can be taken to eliminate
this inequity. Fahey also suggested that the City Clerk and Councilman
LaValle prepare a press release in response to the publication of the
League's survey.
Council discussed the matter further and felt that the problem lies in
that Little Canada is assessed at 95% of its sales r•atio, while other•
cities are assessed at a lower per•centage of their sales r•atio.
Fahey pointed out that State Law required cities to be taxed within 10%
of their assessed valuation, and if this is not being done, the Assessor~'s
Office must take steps to r•aise a city's sales ratio.
Collova asked what the estimated completion date for the Little Canada
Road bridge pr•oject is.
The City Engineer did not know, but stated that he would find out and
r•epor~t to the Council.
Mr. Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION N0. 88-9-400 - ADJOURNING
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by P1r•.
