MINUTES
City Council
September• 28, 1988
FinaServe Fahey suggested that the City Planner ma!<e a recommendation for question
Sign #3 and r•ecommend a percentage of remodeling that could be done with a
(Cont.) site before the existing signs would need to be brought into conformity
with the Sign Ordinance.
Recess At this point in the meeting, 9:05 P.M., Council took a shor~t recess.
The meeting was reconvened at 9:13 P.M.
FinaServe During the recess, the City Planner~ indicated that the City's Sign
Sign Ordinance regulates sign height based on square footage of a building
(Cont.) rather than on Zoning Distr•icts. The Planner• indicated that very few
cities base their sign height limitation on building square footage:
Fahey suggested that since the Council has been pr•esented with a few
cases concerning sign height since the Or•dinance has been adopted in
1984, that the issue merits Council review. fahey suggested that
the Planner look at the effect of changing the City's Sign Ordinance
so that sign height is r•egulated by Zoning District rather than building
size. Fahey pointed out that in the case of FinaSer•ve, they are located
near a freeway.
6lesener did not feel that proximity to a freeway should give a business
more of an advantage than another business.
Fahey suggested that the Planner find out what the other cities surveyed
allow with regard to sign height in commercial areas.
Fahey suggested that action on the FinaServe sign be tabled for another•
month until the Council has had an opportunity to research this issue:
In the meantime, FinaServe would be allowed to retain their existing sign.
Blesener agreed that the sign should be allowed to remain as long as
the matter is under~ Council consideration.
Mr•. Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION N0. 88-9-410 - TABLING ACTION ON THE
FINASERVE SIGN VARIANCE REQUEST PENDING FURTHER
STUDY BY THE CITY PLANNER AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY'S SIGN ORDINANCE WITH DIRECTION TO THE CITY
PLANNER TO RESEARCH THIS MATTER AND BE PREPARED
TO DISCUSS IT AT THE OCTOBER 26, 1988 REGULAR
COUNCIL MEETING
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Mr. Blesener.
Ayes (5) Fahey, Blesener, Collova, Scalze, LaValle.
Nays (0).
Resolution declared adopted.
This resolution appears in Resolution Book No. 20, Page 424.
Page -14-
