MINUTES City Council October 12, 1988 Fir•e Dept. Mr. Blesener intr•oduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: Benefits (Cont.) RESOLUTION N0. 88-10-424 - APPROVING AN INCREASE IN FIRE DEPARTMENT PENSION BENEFITS FROM $1,000 TO $1,200 PER YEAR OF SERVICE TO BE EFFECTIVE IN ACCORDANCE WITH STATE LAW REQUIRED1ENTS The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Mr~. LaValle. Ayes (~) Blesener, Lavalle, Scalze, Collova: Nays (0). Abstains (1) Fahey. Resolution declar•ed adopted. This resolution appears in Resolution Book No. 20, Page 439. Dick Doss appeared before the Council addressing the issue of fir•emen's pension benefits feelina that the Council's constituents would support the increase and would feel it justified given the service the Volunteer• Fire Department has provided the City. Boss pointed out that thr~oughout the industry ther•e is difficulty in getting volunteer firemen. Boss did not feel the pension benefits being r~equested wer•e too much in exchange for~ the service that the firemen give the City. Scalze agreed that there was difficulty in getting volunteers and r~eported that this was a recent topic of discussion at a Ramsey County League meeting. Scalze r~eported that the Council is aware of the good ser~vice the firemen provide the City and appr•eciate it. Collova asked how many men the Little Canada Fire Department has. Boss replied that they would like 36 firemen, however, currently have 34. There is a waiting list of thr•ee, however~, the two vacancies ar•e being kept open in hopes that there will be volunteers approaching the depar•tment who ar•e available dur~ing the daytime hour~s. 1989 Budget The City Cler•k presented the Council with the pr•oposed 1989 Budget which was r~evised by the Council at a workshop meeting held on September• 29, Agenda 1988. The Clerk noted that he r•evised the Unallocated figure to Item No. 5 reflect $20,640.00. Scalze reported that at the budget workshop meeting, the City Council reviewed the compar•able wor~th report which was pr~epar•ed by an outside consultant. It was the concensus of the Council at that meeting to put the r~ecommended wage increases into effect for• Beverly Jespersen, Kris Van Schoonhoven, and Dawn Langenbach as recommended in the r•eport in one step, rather than over a two-year period. Scalze r•eported that after further consideration, she is not in favor• of an additional 2% wage incr•ease for department heads as was discussed at the workshop over• the 4% increase that was agr•eed to for• other City employees.
