MINUTES
City Council
~lovember• 2, 1988
The Council stated that they wer•e not inter•ested in getting into the
r•ental hall business.
P9orelan asked if the City would have the use of the music r~oom or
classr•oom areas of the new addition.
Fahey pointed out that the City ~vould also like the use of the gym
for large public hearings that the City holds occasionally.
LaValle suggested that some cost figur~es for• the showers and storage
space be put together for the next Council meeting.
Thein stated that he would present the pr~oposal for storage space to the
School Boar•d to determine their position. Thein also suggested that he
talk to the architect about the storage space to determine where it
could be located and how much it will cost.
Scalze aqain suggested that the space being pr•oposed for showers and lackers
could be used for stor•aqe space.
Thein agreed tha.t this might wor•k, however•, he could not speak for• the
position of the School Board.
Morelan asked for• the School Boar~d's positionon showers versus stor•age space.
Thein pointecl out that the School Distr•ict needs neither~ the shower•s nor
the stor•age space. Thein pointed out that the School District might say
that the building is mor•e valuable to them if there wer•e showers and
locker rooms versus additional storage space.
Fahey stated that par•t of the feasibility of the showers and locker~ rooms
is the cost involved.. Fahey suggested that the School District might want
to participate in the cost of the shower~s and locker~ rooms by paying 50%
of the cost. The City could then pick up the full cost of the ac!ditional
stor•age space, and the City will use its bonding author•ity to finance
outside improvements.
Thein pointed out that the School Distr•ict does not need the showers but
would still be interested in the Cit,y's bonding for outside impr•ovements.
It was the concensus of the Council that these two issues wer•e separate.
Thein stated that he would discuss the matter with the Superintendent and
also the architect to get some cost estimates.
Fahey again suggested the idea of the School Distr•ict paying for~ 50% of
the shower• improvement.
Thein pointed out that the pr~incipal of the little Canada Elementar~y
School will not be in favor• of this since he will want the funds put
to use for academic improvements.
Collova stated that his position was that the City shoulc! put in the
shower and locker• r•oom impr~ovements as well as stor•age space.
Page -10-
