12 <br /> <br />School Sessions <br />Students were asked to explain a time when they felt included. Results were similar throughout <br />the six sessions. <br />• Students felt included when they were playing with friends and spending time with family <br />• Students also felt included when invited to play at a friend’s house or to a birthday party <br /> <br />When asked to “What could have made them feel included,” students responded they could have <br />felt more included if: <br />• They were being talked to <br />• Ideas were listened to and valued <br />• Their opinion had been asked <br />• They had been invited <br />• They hadn’t been “left out” <br /> <br />When asked to plan an inclusive activity for the city, the students shared several great ideas, <br />some of which are outlined below. City staff has retained all the ideas submitted by students: <br />• Soccer tournament/indoor soccer <br />• Free events <br />• Events with food, drinks and games <br />• Cultural food events <br />• Sports days/outdoor games <br />• Concerts <br />• Carnival <br />Overall Themes <br />Across all engagement efforts, seven themes emerged: <br />1. Effective Communication: Importance of two-way and open communication <br />2. Access to Resources: Advertisement of available programs, and elimination of barriers <br />3. Representation: Community representation in government including languages utilized for <br />communication <br />4. Community Engagement: Opportunities for meaningful dialogue and authentic <br />connection <br />5. Inclusive Events: Programming designed for all demographics <br />6. Accessibility: Ensuring physical, mental, and economic inclusion in government <br />7. Education & Awareness: Promoting, celebrating, and understanding diverse backgrounds <br />and community members <br />Limitations and Data Acknowledgements <br />• Sample Size <br />The Community Inclusion Team understands and acknowledges that the survey responses <br />received do not constitute a statistical representation of the community. <br /> <br />• Demographic Comparison <br />In analyzing the demographics of the community, the Community Inclusion Team <br />acknowledges that the demographics of respondents do not mirror the percentages in the <br />community as outlined in the American Community Survey or Decennial Census.
