MINUTES
City Council
January 4, 1990
Kross replied that plans are to provide 60 parking
spaces.
LaValle questioned the need for 60 spaces, pointing out
that there are approximately 35 fireman.
Jim Morelan replied that mutual aid meetings are held
several times per year, and 25 to 30 additional spaces
are needed for those meetings.
Kroos reported that there were 53 parking spaces at the
Mendota Heights fire station.
Kroos reported that with a two-story station additional
space is needed for stairways.
Kroos then reviewed the types of inechanical systems
that could be used for the station, recommending
roof-top units that are located high in the apparatus
bay. Kross reported that there are options of roof-top
mounted units, as well as boiler and air-handling
units. However, the roof-top mounted units pose
problems with servicing during the winter and with
screening, while the boiler units add about $3 per
square foot to the cost of the project.
Kroos reported that with the two-story station, two
means of ingress and egress are needed, therefore, two
stairways are needed, although one could be an outside
stairway.
Fahey pointed out that if the buildng size is reduced
to 10,000 square feet, $150,000 in building costs would
be saved.
Jim Morelan stated that he did not believe the building
size could be reduced by that much and still have a
functional building. Morelan suggested that perhaps
the building size could be reduced to 11,000 square
feet, resulting in a cost savings of $75,000.
Kroos pointed out that the Mendota Heights building was
10,655 square feet in size.
Fahey asked where the extra square footage is allocated
in the proposed Little Canada station. Fahey pointed
out that the Mendota Heights~ fire department personnel
have indicated that they have a lack of storage space
in their station.
Page 3
