MINUTES
City Council
January 4, 1990
Fahey also expressed concern that the cost estimates
presented this evening are about $450,000 more than
expected.
Mickelberg reported that approximately 5,500 square
feet are allocated to the apparatus room,
LaValle asked the cost of a full basement.
Kroos estimated that raw basement costs would run
between $25 and $30 per square foot. However, there
are some unknowns regarding the site, and it has not
been determined if a basement could be put in.
Boss pointed out that in comparing the Mendota Heights
station and the proposed Little Canada station, there
is a great deal of extra square footage in bathroom
facilities at the Little Canada station.
Fahey agreed, and indicated that he felt this was not a
good use of the square footage.
Kroos explained that the State Codes have changed since
the Mendota Heights station was built, and the State is
requiring more square footage in public restroom
facilities. However, Kroos thought that the City~s
Building Official could work with the State on that
issue.
Boss reported that Mendota Heights~ personnel have
indicated that they do not have adequate room at their
fire station and are thinking about adding on to the
station.
Scalze pointed out that when touring the Mendota
Height's facility, there was no indication of thoughts
to add on to the station, and Scalze pointed out that
an antique fire vehicle and chief's car were stored in
the apparatus bays.
Boss replied that additional room is needed in the
functional area of the apparatus bays. Boss pointed
out that the Fire Department had a committee which
studied various fire stations to determine what
mistakes or needs existed at these stations to ensure
that these concerns could be avoided with the new
Little Canada station.
Page 4
