MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 27, 1990
commercial boundary with the City of Roseville and
stated that he would accept Roseville's sign ordinance.
That ordinance requires free-standing signs to be
setback 30 feet from the property line.
Scalze stated that she felt the City's sign ordinance
was liberal and felt that if the ordinance needed to be
changed, the City should go with Roseville's ordinance.
Scalze was concerned with the amount of time that the
Council has spent on the siqn ordinance, and £elt that
the Council should not be debating the ordinance with
every developer who comes in pushing for more than the
ordinance allows.
Blesener felt there are areas of the sign ordinance
that need cleaning up, pointing out that the provision
allowing for a second pylon was meant to apply to
shopping centers with more than one frontage.
Fahey suggested that the City Planner come up with
criteria the must be met for the second pylon as well
as the language necessary to allow for a separate pylon
for detached buildings.
Scalze pointed out that the next shopping center
developed under a PUD could have five separate
buildings. Scalze asked when a shopping center was a
shopping center and not a bunch of detached buildings.
Scalze was concerned that the City was changing the
Sign Ordinance all the time.
Fahey pointed out that City ordinances are continually
being updated.
Scalze replied that the Sign Ordinance is getting more
liberal all the time.
Fahey replied that the Sign Ordinance was adopted
without much study and now the City is seeinq the
impact.
Blesener suggested that the size of free-standing signs
be looked at as well.
The City Planner pointed out that size of signs is
regulated by the size of the buildings. The Planner
suggested that 500 feet of frontage be the point where
a shopping center would be allowed a second
free-standing sign.
Fahey agreed and suggested that the second sign be
required to be set 40 feet from the corner.
Page 18
