MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEMBER 11, 1991
Lt. Votel reported that the general trend shows an
increase in domestic violence in the County area.
Votel reported that the County is taking a pro-active
approach in trying to deal with this problem, and is
developing counseling programs for people who are
repeat victims of this type of crime. Also, the
Sheriff's Department is now able, due to State Law
changes, to pursue prosecution for these crimes even
when the victim will not sign a complaint.
Blesener asked Little Canada's population in relation
to the other contracting cities.
Lt. Votel replied that the population of all the
contracting cities is approximately 70,000, of which
Little Canada's population is approximately 9,000.
Blesener asked if there were any "hot spots" in the
City where crimes are occurring in larger numbers than
other areas.
Votel identified certain apartment complexes and one of
the City's industrial parks as hot spots. Votel also
indicated that citizens should not hesitate to call the
Sheriff's Department when they observe suspicious
activity.
Votel reported that the Sheriff's Department is putting
into place a program of enhanced patrolling. That is
improving the image of the deputies so that they are
perceived by the community as problem-solvers. Votel
also reported that the Sheriff's Department is trying
to obtain fundinq for the addition of a crime
prevention officer, so that once crime trends are
identified and observed in areas, the Sheriff's
Department can address the situation in a more
pro-active way.
Blesener suggested that the City's quarterly newsletter
include crime prevention articles.
The Council thanked the Sheriff's Department for its
presentation, and Lt. Votel indicated a willingness to
meet with the Council on a quarterly basis to keep them
informed.
Page 2
