MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 27, 1991
LaValle suggested that perhaps the City should be
compensated for maintenance and upkeep of the old fire
station by the groups using it.
Scalze pointed out that groups using the fire station,
the LCRA, Historical Society, and Canadian Days
Committee, are groups of volunteers who are not makinq
any salaries. Scalze questioned where these groups
would get the funds to pay for maintenance and upkeep.
LaValle suggested that donations would be a source.
LaValle suggested that the additional revenue that
would be generated could be put into the Fire
Department's compensation package. LaValle felt that
compensation being paid fire fighters for equipment
maintenance, etc. was too low.
Blesener felt that taking gambling money to offset
general fund expenses would set a dangerous precedent.
Scalze pointed out that if the City is going to expand
its recreation program, and that program uses the lower
level of the old fire station, maintenance and upkeep
of the lower level should be recouped in increased
registration fees. Scalze also suggested that the City
look at renting out the lower level of the old fire
station to attempt to get the building to pay for
itself. Scalze stated that she did not know where the
committee was on this issue, but felt it should be
considered. Scalze stated that she would not be
comfortable asking the LCRA, Historical Society, or
Canadian Days Committee for money for rent for their
use of the old fire station for Fire Department
compensation.
LaValle pointed out that it is projected that the old
fire station will cost $12,800 during 1992 to maintain.
Blesener suggested that if the City cannot afford to
retain the old fire station, then it should be sold.
Scalze felt it would be a great mistake to sell a
building because it is costing the City $12,800 to
maintain. Scalze felt that if the building can
generate some revenue for the City, that issue should
be looked at.
Blesener pointed out that if the City is going to
charge the Historical Society rent for the building,
the Historical Society will probably increase their
budget request to the City. Blesener felt the old fire
station was being put to good use, and the City should
continue that use.
Page 10
