MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />NOVEMBER 27, 1991 <br />The Fire Chief stated that he would like to qo to the <br />fire fighters and tell them that the City is behind <br />them 100%. The Chief indicated that the Fire <br />Department went over their budget request thoroughly, <br />and felt it did a11 its compromising as part of their <br />review. The Chief did not feel he would get a good <br />response from the membership on the cuts that the City <br />is proposing. <br />Scalze pointed out that the Council's job is not easy, <br />and pointed out the other cuts affecting other City <br />departments that are proposed. Scalze pointed out that <br />the Council also hears other comments from the general <br />public, for example, questioning the size of the new <br />Fire Station. Scalze pointed out that the City planned <br />for the future in building the new Fire Station, and <br />she supports that decision. However, there are <br />citizens who feel the City could have gotten by with <br />less of a building. <br />Blesener felt the cuts proposed tonight should be <br />adopted. However, the City will wait and see what the <br />State will do to local government aids during 1992. If <br />additional cuts in LGA's are not made, the budget can <br />be adjusted accordingly. <br />The Chief asked about the 10% gambling funds that the <br />City received from the charities. <br />Scalze pointed out that the City initially decided that <br />those funds would go to park development because at the <br />time that is where the need was. <br />Dick Boss reported that the Fire Department has donated <br />approximately $80,000 to the City through this 10% <br />donation, and questioned this money going to another <br />City entity when the Fire Department has to absorb big <br />cuts to their budget. <br />Scalze reported that Blesener has brought up this <br />issue, and the Council is requesting the Park <br />Commission's position on it. <br />Blesener pointed out that his recommended cuts are <br />actually $10,000 to $15,000 less to the Fire Department <br />than what the City Administrator had proposed. <br />The City Administrator offered to attend a Fire <br />Department membership meeting to explain the City's <br />budget situation and the cuts that are being made to <br />the Fire Department's budget request. <br />Hanson indicated that Bob DeBace has informed him that <br />Page 11 <br />
