MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 8, 1992
Scalze stated that she believes the Little Canada
recreation program needs a lot of help and that the
program is stagnant. Scalze pointed out that there are
no programs for children that do not participate in
athletics. Scalze stated that this has been in the
back of her mind in looking at contracting with another
city.
Scalze stated that she would hope that the LCRA would
not have the feeling that if the Council is to be
open-minded it will withdraw its financial support of
the City's recreation program. Scalze stated that
based on tonight's input from the LCRA, the question is
whether to destroy the program or hire a full-time
Director. Based on that input Scalze stated that she
would probably support the full-time Director, however,
stated that the process is disappointing.
Hanson stated that as a member of the Council it is
important to consider the input of every resident of
the City, whether they have children in the recreation
program or not. Hanson pointed out that in the past
year the City has looked at several areas to see if a
cost-savings could be realized. Hanson believed this
was the Council's job in terms of being fiscally
responsible. Hanson also stated that there may be
times when citizens are disappointed in the Council,
but there are also times when the Council is
disappointed with the public.
Hanson pointed out that even though Council Member
Collova could not be present this evening, he submitted
a letter stating that his position was that at this
point the City continue to consider the Roseville
option, but not rule out the hiring of a full-time
Director.
Hanson pointed out the recommendation of the recreation
committee on a 4 to 1 vote to continue to pursue the
Roseville option.
Hanson acknowledged the input received this evening,
and stated that those present are more effected by the
program than he is. Hanson stated that he was elected
to office to serve the residents, therefore, will
support the full-time Director position. However,
Hanson, too, felt that the process was disappointing.
Blesener stated that no one has said that Little Canada
should not work with other communities, but have said
that Little Canada should chose what is best for us.
Blesener felt that the City needed to direct its own
recreation program. Blesener stated that he would say
Page 19
