MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEMBER 14, 1992
taxes. Scalze stated that she did not see Little
Canada leading the pack, and pointed out that the
City's bonded debt situation will not get any better
for the next few years.
Collova pointed out that the Relief Board could raise
the benefit level without Council approval once the
fund exceeds 100% funding.
Joe Vitali stated that Roseville fire fighters are paid
by the hour when fighting fires, while Little Canada
fire fighters receive a per fire stipend, except for
larger, longer fires, when Little Canada fire fighters
are paid by the hour.
Collova pointed out that fire fighters have other perks
that other cities do not, such as use of the old fire
hall basement for personal use.
LaValle stated that he agreed with Collova's position,
and stated that he did not know how the City could
justify an increase in benefit level, when it just
discussed cutting $S00 for a telephone which is needed
for emergency situations. LaValle pointed out that not
increasing the benefit level, but increasing the City's
contribution to the fund will help the younger fire
fighters, by keeping the fund in good shape even with
the upcoming retirements. LaValle pointed out that
last year the City increased compensation for fire
fighters as well as pension benefit level. The City is
only able to increase so much in these difficult
financial times.
Blesener stated that he would support Collova's
recommendation.
Scalze stated that she would support a City
contribution to the fund of $14,60o with benefit level
remaining at $2,000.
Hanson agreed with Scalze's recommendation.
DeBace felt that the Council was losing site of the
importance of keeping the pension funded for the
younger fire fighters coming up. DeBace also pointed
out the important job that the fire fighters do and the
sacrifices that they make.
LaValle stated that the Council is well
keeping the pension funded, and that is
recommendation was made to increase the
contribution to $16,500. LaValle also
the Council knows the good job the fire
Page 9
aware of
why the
City's
indicated that
fighters so,
