MINUTE5
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 28, 1992
any amount of compensation. Fahey reported that the
annual compensation portion of the Fire Department
budget amounts to $30,000 for 35 fire fighters who are
on call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Fahey
welcomed anyone from the general public to contact him
at 484-2722 or Steve Morelan with any questions or
concerns about the Fire Department.
Fahey reported that the fire fighters qive many, many
unpaid hours to the City. Fahey also noted that the
limited compensation the fire fighters do receive does
not include medical coverage, life insurance, vacation,
sick leave, holiday pay, overtime pay, etc. Fahey
stated that the City's per capita cost for fire
protection is very reasonable.
Fahey reported that as far as the Fire Department's
charitable gambling activities, the Fire Department has
donated a lot of money to the City. 100% of their
profits go to the City. $150,000 was donated toward
the purchase of the land for the new fire station,
$275,000 for the new truck, $120,000 to the Fire
Department Pension Fund, and the balance to buy other
needed equipment. Fahey pointed out that charitable
gambling funds have not been used to run the Fire
Department, but have been used to accelerate equipment
purchases and provide better safety for the citizens of
Little Canada. Fahey pointed out that one prime
example where the ladder truck is needed is to access
the back of the Sleepy Hollow apartment buildings.
Fahey reported that the Fire Department did consult
with the City prior to purchasing the ladder truck.
The Fire Department raised $275,000 of the cost of that
truck without cost to the taxpayer. The Fire
Department could have borrowed the remaining balance
from a bank, however, the City suggested funding the
balance from the fire station building fund, thus
saving interest costs.
Fahey urged any residents who wish to get involved to
run for City Council, apply for membership in the Park
Commission, the Park and Recreation Commission, the
LCRA, Canadian Days Committee, or the Fire Department.
Fahey did not believe there was the need to form
another organization, when there are already so many
that citizens can become involved with.
Fahey again urged citizens to come to the City or Fire
Department with their questions. Fahey reported that
the fire fighters are proud to serve the City and will
continue to be involved in the community in every
capacity that they can help the City to improve.
Page 23
