MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
DECEMBER 9, 1992
matter when that additional parking is developed, the
City will hear the same concerns from the residents.
Wehrle agreed that the concerns were valid ones, but
felt that eventually the City will have to make a
decision based on the need of the Park. wehrle felt
that Blesener's points were good ones. Wehrle noted
that the need is there for more parking, and his
preferenoe would be to see it on the north.
Blesener felt that the potential for additional parking
to the north was a long time away. Blesener felt that
the additional 35 spaces should be on the Centerville
Road side, feeling that this was the only natural place
for it. Blesener also felt that if the parking is
added on Centerville Road side, that an second access
be provided as well.
Bill Bruce pointed out that the Park Commission has
debated this issue for a long time, and did not believe
it would serve any purpose to return the matter to the
Park Commission. Bruce reported that in his experience
coaching and filming games, the parking problem occurs
when adult teams are playing. It appears that people
are car-pooling, walking, or riding bikes to youth
games.
Bruce pointed out the potential for 120 parking spaces
to the north. Bruce stated that he would like to see a
temporary solution to the parking problem, and felt
that reprogramming of the adult leagues and scheduling
more youth teams would help the problem. Bruce stated
that he heard that adult teams are being scheduled at
Pioneer Park because adults bring in more revenue to
the City, and the Council has indicated that the
Director should be bring in more adult leagues for that
revenue. Bruce stated that he hears from people that
they want to see more youth teams playing at Pioneer
Park. There has also been concern expressed about the
behavior of the adult teams.
Bruce felt that the Centerville Road side was the best
location for 35 additional parking spaces with a second
access, but indicated that he would hate to see any
trees come down and pointed out that drainage is an
issue.
Bruce pointed out that a lot of the City's recreational
programming is done by the City of Maplewood. Bruce
hoped that now that the City has a full-time Parks and
Recreation Director, that he could have more of an
impact on programming so that there is more dispersion
of cars through the City. Bruce felt that adult teams
could play on other fields until something happens with
Page 12
