Boss reported that the Fire Department's <br />gambling operation has been audited annually by an <br />independent auditing firm. The Fire Department holds <br />quarterly communications workshops with the City <br />Council where various issues are discussed, including <br />gambling issues. Boss pointed out that the Fire <br />Department did inform the City Council that it would be <br />$80,000 to $100,000 short for the fire truck that was <br />ordered. Boss pointed out that the cost of the fire <br />truck was $385,000, and the Fire Department put a down <br />payment of $275,000 on that truck. <br />Boss reported that the Fire Department gambling <br />operations is running well, and the City is well <br />informed on the operation. There are appropriate <br />communications channels in place to address any <br />concerns. Boss pointed out that he has spent many <br />hours with City staff on gambling issues, and that <br />Council Member LaValle has never hesitated to ask tough <br />questions about the gambling operation and has always <br />gotten direct answers. <br />Boss stated that a committee is unneeded, particularly <br />one that had members on an open crusade against the <br />Fire Department. Boss stated that there is no public <br />outcry demanding additional regulation. The Council <br />and City staff have all the information it needs, and <br />if it wants more the charities will be happy to provide <br />it. <br />Boss pointed out that he has been gambling manager for <br />the Fire Department for the past 5 1/2 years, and <br />indicated that he has done well in that capacity. Boss <br />stated that if anyone has any questions about the Fire <br />Department's gambling operation, they should not <br />hesitate to ask. Boss reported that his salary for <br />serving as gambling manager for the Fire Department has <br />been approximately $18,000 annually. Boss pointed out <br />that gross sales for the Fire Department's qambling <br />operation is $1.6 million. Boss recalled the details <br />of a conversation he had with John Vitali during which <br />Vitali had expected the salary for a manager of a$1.6 <br />million operation to be $125,000 annually. Boss also <br />reported that he informed Vitali that the charities pay <br />over $20 per square foot for the space they lease, and <br />Vitali replied that he would fire a manager who paid <br />that kind of rent. Boss reported that his conversation <br />with Vitali was prompted by the rumors that Vitali had <br />been hearing.
