MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 10, 1993
because the Council would see what turkeys they are.
Fahey pointed out that the spreadsheet that he
presented showing the members of the famous families
and their salaries show this comment to be false.
Again, Fahey pointed out the salaries paid, and that
these figures are available from the reports submitted
to the State and City.
Fahey indicated that another comment made by Clasen was
that 90% of the jobs at the bingo hall were held by
members of the "famous families". Fahey pointed out
that the bingo employees approximately 75 individuals,
9 of them being members of the families referred to by
Clasen, and a total of 14 if other fire-fighters and
their wives or children are included, or 20% of the
total crew.
Fahey pointed out that at the last workshop meeting
some Council members indicated that a gambling
committee was appropriate. Fahey asked for what and
why? Fahey pointed out that last year the Fire
Department paid the City over $9,000 as a 30
enforcement tax. Fahey estimated that the City has
oollected between $50,000 and $60,000 in enforcement
taxes. Fahey also reported that neither the Fire
Department nor the charities ever asked the City to
form a gambling committee. The charities did ask for a
gambling ordinance, however.
Fahey felt that the City had a good administrative
staff, and suggested that with enforcement monies it
could hire an accountant to look at the facts and
figures submitted by the charities. However, felt that
a committee would be a waste of time. Fahey suggested
that when the Council gets a question on charitable
gambling that it put that question in writing and let
the staff and members of the charities respond. Fahey
felt that this was the appropriate way to stop the
rumors and answer the questions. Fahey felt that the
Council did not need a committee to do what they have
been elected to do.
Hanson stated that the Council must answer questions
when they are asked. Hanson also pointed out that none
of the 3% money the City has collected for enforcement
has been paid to Clasen for the research he has done.
Fahey stated that he did not imply that the City
Council should not answer the questions they are asked.
Bob Nash reported that in 1985 he was instrumental,
along with members of the Senate and House, in getting
Page 7
