MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MARCH 3, 1993
Pedersen asked what happens at drills.
Boss replied that about 250 of drill activity involves
informational meetings. The last drill included a
presentation from the State Fire Marshall's office.
75% of the time, however, drills are spent in actual
drilling exercises.
Boss reported on the standing committees that are
appointed on an annual basis within the Fire
Department. These committees include Building
Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance and Vehicle Cleaning,
Training, New Applications, Uniforms, Protective
Clothing, Attendance, Attendance Chart, Fire
Prevention, Public Education, New Fire Fighters,
Safety, Agility Entrance Test, Member Education,
Computer, Budget, Captains, and Relief Association.
With regard to the Applications Committee, LaValle
asked how many names of individuals interested in
becominq fire fighters does the Fire Department have on
a waiting list.
Boss replied that there are currently four applicants
on the waiting list. These applications are reviewed
every six months with letters sent to the individuals
asking if they are still interested. The applicants
are requested to reply in writing indicating if they
are still interested. Boss reported that two of the
applicants have been on the list for two years now.
The Fire Department has encouraged these individuals to
attend Fire Fighters I training so that when an opening
occurs, they can begin immediately. Fire Fights I
training is a minimum requirement for new fire
fighters.
Scalze asked what the Department does to generate new
applications, and suggested that perhaps a notice in
the newspaper would be helpful.
Boss reported that there are applications for
interested individuals at both the City Center and Fire
Station. People who are interested in joining the Fire
Department have always come forward and expressed
interest. Boss felt that the Department has a good
cross-section of inembers, and reported that the City
has been very fortunate in that it has always had
interested citizens come forward to serve. Boss
reported that he did not want to place a newspaper ad
and mislead people that there are currently openings.
Boss reported that the Fire Department currently has 36
fire fighters. There is the inkling of one possible
retirement during 1993.
Pedersen asked how the 36 member figure was arrived at.
Page 3
