MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
DECEMBER 8, 1993
Bergeron replied that contractors with repeat
violations are generally cited. First offenses receive
a warning.
Bergeron then submitted reports comparing incident
activity between some city businesses as well as a
report comparing incident activity between the Montreal
Courts Apartment buildings. Bergeron noted the heavy
amount of incidents at U.S. Swim & Fitness as well as
at Montreal Courts, and pointed out that increased
security at Brady's, both inside and out, has resulted
in a decrease in calls to that location.
Bergeron presented a graph showing Calls for Service in
Little Canada. 10.7% of the calls for service generate
from the Montreal Court Apartments. Bergeron pointed
out the high population density in that location.
The next graph presented showed number of theft calls.
11.0% of theft calls generate from U.S. Swim & Fitness,
while 8.7% generate from the Montreal Courts
Apartments. A graph showing criminal damage to
property calls shows that 7.4% of these calls generate
from the Montreal Courts Apartments, while 3.1%
generate from U.S. Swim & Fitness. The final graph
presented showed assault calls, and Berqeron noted that
25.0% of assault calls generate from the Alternative
Learning Center, while 12.5% are from Montreal Courts
Apartments, 6.3% from Brady's, and 3.1% from
Hoggsbreath.
Bergeron reported that the children at the Center are
very much at risk. A call at the center will typically
tie up a squad for 2 to 3 hours, and whenever possible,
two squads will respond to assess the situation.
Scalze pointed out that the children coming to the
Alternative Learning Center come from 13 different
jurisdictions.
Morelan pointed out that while 250 of assault calls
generate from the ALC, only 2% of total calls come from
that location.
Scalze pointed out that the calls at the ALC take a
good deal more of the squad's time than other calls.
Scalze asked what the City can do to try to reduce the
need for service.
Page 2
