MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />MARCH 9, 1994 <br />The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by LaValle. <br />Ayes (5) Scalze, LaValle, Hanson, Pedersen, Morelan. <br />Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted. <br />ANNOUNCEMENTS Hanson announced an employee volunteer recognition <br /> program that Medtronics offers its employees. <br /> Medtronics will make a donation to a non-profit <br /> organization of the employee's choice in recognition <br /> for their volunteer activities. In recognition of <br /> Kevin Hamernick~s volunteer work, the Little Canada <br /> Recreation Association received $100 donation from <br /> Medtronics. <br />VARIANCE Hanson opened the continuation of public hearing <br />REQUE5T to consider a Variance to the sign provisions of <br />FOR SIGN SIZE Zoning Ordinance allowing a free-standing sign which <br />THE MARKET exceeds the maximum surface area of 200 square feet as <br />PLACE 5HOPPING requested by Stewart Chazin, Team Properties, <br />CENTER representing The Market Place Shopping Center. <br /> Chazin reported that he has a prospective tenant <br /> interested in leasing 10,000 square feet at The Market <br /> Place Shopping Center. However, that tenant is not <br /> interested in leasinq unless assured signage on Rice <br /> Street. Chazin pointed out the variance is needed in <br /> order to provide signage for the tenants and to lease <br /> the space. <br />There was no one from the general public present <br />wishing to comment on this matter. <br />Upon motion by Morelan, seconded by LaValle, the public <br />hearing was closed. <br />Morelan pointed out that the Planning Commission <br />recommended in favor of the variance request. <br />Scalze did not believe the request met the intent of <br />the ordinance. Scalze indicated that she agreed that a <br />bigger sign is needed at The Market Place, but felt the <br />best way to address this need was to amend the <br />ordinance increasing the maximum surface area allowed <br />for a major shopping center with a major tenant. <br />Scalze stated that she opposed the variance request, <br />because she felt the best way to address the situation <br />was to amend the ordinance.
