MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 13, 1994
management at Montreal Courts. The apartment management
is interested in working with the Sheriff~s Department.
Management and staff are interested in maintaining a nice
neighborhood. Meetings with the residents, management,
and Sheriff's Department have been positive and a big
step in solving the problems at the complex.
Hanson reported that the Montreal Courts management
definitely welcome the appearance of the Ramsey County
Deputies, and have begun a campaign of trying to get the
residents to know one another.
Shandley reported that they have also begun a vehicle
stickering system so that Deputies driving through can
identify vehicles without stickers and run them and
identify their owners. Shandley also reported that if a
lot of calls are being made to a particular unit, the
Deputies can notify management who will then try to get
the individuals or family the help they need. Those
individuals or the family can also be put on notice that
if the calls continue, they will be evicted.
Bergeron felt the programs that are being started may not
decrease the number of calls to the Sheriff's Department,
but will get the Sheriff's Department involved in the
problem-solving process before the problems become big
ones.
Pedersen asked the types of calls being received for
Montreal Courts.
Bergeron reported a wide variety in the types of calls,
from thefts to assaults to check the welfare of an
individual.
Scalze felt that there were only a very few people
causing the majority of the problems at Montreal Courts,
and suggested that those individuals be identified.
Scalze sugqested that if those individuals are identified
and Montreal Courts management does not do something
about these tenants, then the City should step in.
Bergeron replied that the Sheriff's Department has done
some things to address the situation, such as working
with residents and management on neighborhood watch and
crime prevention programs. The next step is that
deputies will meet with neighbors and management and talk
about common problems and ways to resolve those problems.
6
