MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 27, 1994
The Chief estimated an even exchange of the number of
times Little Canada calls for mutual aid and the number
of times Little Canada responds to mutual aid calls. The
Chief also explained that the first chief responding to a
fire call will make the determination of whether or not
mutual aid is necessary. When mutual aid is used, one of
the mutual aid responders is asked to man the Little
Canada Fire Department to protect the rest of the City.
One of the Little Canada crew will remain with the mutual
aid responder so that at least one fire fighter is on
hand who is familiar with the City.
The Chief reported that in addition to fire calls and
drills, during 1993 training and continuing education of
the department was also done in many areas. Fire
Prevention Week activities are conducted for the
elementary schools in the City, as well as other fire
prevention activities throughout the year. The Chief
reported that the Fire Department is completing its smoke
detector program. A total of 850 smoke detectors were
passed out to the citizens of Little Canada. The Chief
indicated that he would be working with City staff to get
an article in the City's newsletter reminding residents
to check the batteries in their smoke detectors.
Hanson pointed out that the smoke detectors that were
distributed in the City were purchased with dollars
donated by the local charities. Hanson asked if
additional funding was needed to purchase additional
detectors.
The Chief felt that the Department had an adequate supply
of detectors on hand at the moment. If supplies run low,
the Department may request additional funding for the
smoke detector program from the 10% funds. The Chief
noted that the Little Canada Fire Department was the
first community in the Metro area to begin a smoke
detector give-away program, and since that time a lot of
other communities have followed suit.
The Chief informed the Council of the 1994 Little Canada
Fire Department officer assignments. Also, during 1994
the following individuals retired from the Fire
Department: Tom Stadler, Gene Fasciana, Bob DeBace, Troy
Colvard, Frank Graczyk, and Dan Peterson. New fire
fighters recently appointed are Kevin Steinert, Tim Boss,
and Larry Jones. The Chief reported that the Fire
Department has typically been at a 36-man crew, and is
2
