MINUTES CITY COUNCIL JUNE 22, 1994 Morelan pointed out that the City has some 6-foot wide trails. Wehrle agreed and reported that the narrower trails are internal-type trails and part of a loop system. The Commission had supported wider trails in these areas. However, citizens wanted narrower widths. Morelan agreed that trails were different than sidewalks, and believed the two could work in conjunction with one another. However, limited dollars could make only one feasible. Wehrle agreed, but pointed out that in this particular area, the Commission is trying to get a direct link between a neighborhood and the City's recreation facilities. The Commission recommends the improvement of the trail along Jackson Street from Demont to Australian. Waite asked if the trail could be connected to County Road C. Wehrle replied that the City does not have a trail easement out to County Road C. There are also some grade problems in the area. Hanson pointed out that the Engineer's estimate for the Jackson Street trail improvement from Demont to Australian is $38,770. Hanson asked where this money would come from. The Administrator suggested the Closed Bond Fund, Street Overlay Fund, or MSA Funds as possible sources. Another may be the Capital Improvement Fund. The Administrator stated that if the improvement is important to do, the City could fund it. The issue is how the Jackson Street trail improvement ties in with other priorities. Scalze pointed out that the improvement is proposed at this time due to the street reconstruction project which will take place later this summer. It is believed that the City would realize a cost savings in improving the trail at the same time. Pedersen asked if it is proposed to extend the trail on Lakeshore Avenue between Australian and County Road C. 15
