MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 22, 1994
The City Engineer replied that there would be room in
the right-of-way for the trail, however, existing yards
would be disturbed and three mature evergreens would
have to be removed. Placing the sidewalk immediately
adjacent to the curb would conflict with existing power
poles.
Pedersen asked if the Jackson trail from Demont to
Australian would be non-evasive.
Wehrle replied that the Commission has not looked at
the trail from that perspective. However, as far as he
knew, there wasn't a problem. Wehrle did point out
that in some areas, such as around Gervais Lake for
example, there may be some sacrifices that will need to
be made.
Don Demont pointed out that there are residents on
Lakeshore who are living on fixed incomes and cannot
afford assessments. Demont reported that he opposed
the improvement of a path from the end of Lake Street
to Savage Lake. Demont felt that such a path would
attract children to the lake, and this would increase
the City's liability exposure.
Scalze reported that she brought up this path since it
was discussed by the Park & Recreation Commission at
one time. Scalze stated that she felt that if this is
something that was wanted, the time to put it in would
be when the street in the area are being improved.
Scalze pointed out that the meeting this evening is a
forum for the exchange of ideas between the Council and
the residents of the area.
Morelan indicated that it was never his intention that
sidewalk improvements should be assessed.
Demont replied that he was referring to all
assessments, including those that will be levied for
the street improvements.
Chuck Nagle, Lake Street residents, reported that he
did not have strong feelinqs one way or another on the
sidewalk and trail issue, but was bewildered about the
City's master plan that has been referred to. Nagle
reported that several years about there was talk about
a walkway from Demont Avenue through the swamp, around
Savage Lake and up to Little Canada Road.
