MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
J~1NiJARY 18 , 19 9 5
alignment #2 is that the water main and hydrants would
be located in an easily maintainable area.
Disadvantages are that the location is dependent on MN
DOT approval, and there is the need to remove 500 to
800 feet of street due to the close proximity of the
Highway 36 ramp. The Engineer noted that he also
included an option 2B which includes street
reconstruction. Estimated cost of Option 1 is $94,300,
Option 2 is $104,000, and Option 3 is $180,300.
Fahey asked if there was anyone from the general public
present wishing to comment on the project.
Homer Rector, owner of Lot 31, pointed out that his lot
is vacant. Rector stated that he favored the water
main improvement, and had no strong feelings about the
road. As far as he was concerned, the existing road
serves the purpose. Rector stated that alignment #1
was acceptable to him.
Fahey pointed out that City Staff is recommending that
the roadway be reconstructed.
Scalze asked how soon Public Works would estimate the
road would need reconstruction, given its present
condition.
The Public Works Superintendent reported that a portion
of the road is in fairly good shape, however, that is
the area which must be dug up for the water main in
order to avoid the Highway 36 ramp. The remainder of
the road is in poor shape, and about one-third would
have to be replaced in the fairly near future.
Scalze asked if this was the opportune time to replace
the road, or should the City wait.
A property owner asked where the water main would go.
Fahey replied that staff is recommending that the water
main be placed on the south side of the road, which
eliminates the need for additional easements, tearing
up driveways and loss of trees. However, it is a
little more expensive to place the water main in this
area. Fahey pointed out that the cost of water main to
the property owners would be capped at $4,600 per lot.
Rector pointed out that there would be a cost
2
