MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 24, 1995
store, donut shop, bakery, drug store.
The bingo hall is a destination. Lots of customers at
Rainbow after bingo session. Do not believe bingo hall
customers use Rainbow after sessions. Interior gate
closed.
Where do customers of Saxon come from. A lot of local
people.
People on the west side of 35E patronize businesses in
the area. Where do people on the east side of 35E go -
Maplewood Mall, Menards. Cheaper prices, easier access
to Maplewood businesses, not much further than Rioe
Street businesses.
Would use theater on Little Canada Road.
For area to work need 3 or 4 good destination-type
businesses. Once those established, area will
naturally proqress. Need good family sit-down
restaurant.
What areas do you go to that would be nice for Little
Canada - Como off 280; Grand Avenue; 50th & France;
Larpentuer/Lexington area. Larpentuer/Lexington looks
congested, terrible - but good uses. Roseville just
hired consultant to work on Larpentuer/Lexington area.
River front in New York - beat up barge area, multi-
level buildings, terraces, little eateries, several
choices. Perhaps there is no longer a reason from a
code standpoint to prohibit multi-story buildings in
Little Canada. Stillwater - old buildings, but tough
traffic situation.
We can set the tone in Rice Street/Little Canada Road
area. We need some unique designs. Something that
will give the area staying power.
Think about safety. If very accessible to public
transportation, could be safety problems.
Water plays an important part in most of the places
named a few moments ago. Man-made water or better use
of Round Lake. WBL's fountain. Market nights in WBL.
Vandalism problems. Younq people hanging out, drug
problems. Must take good with bad to a degree.
Dick Boss asked if the consultants sit down
individually with business owners along Rice Street?
Fifield replied that they had
reported that the a lot of the
place this evening will happen
not planned to. Fifield
same discussion as took
at the first town
9
