MINUTE5
CTTY COUNCIL
AUGUST 31, 1995
or more.
Morris indicated that the over 65 years in age group
has increased by 50%. There was a drop in the 25 to 34
years of age group. The number of school-aged children
has also increased by 50%. However, the number of pre-
school aged children has remained constant. Morris
further reported that the number of college graduates
has increased from 30% in 1987 to 43% in 1995. Morris
stated that the increase in this percentage is more
striking in Little Canada than it has been in other
Ramsey County cities.
Morris reported that there was little change in
household occupation structure from 1987. However,
there was a very rapid increase in income levels. In
1987, 15% of the population had incomes over $50,000.
In 1995, 28% exceeded the $50,000 income level. This
is far more rapid an increase than in any other
community across Ramsey County.
Morris reported that the survey asked residents to rate
the quality of life in Little Canada. 89% rated it
excellent to good, which is a rating in the top third
for communities in Ramsey County. In defining "quality
of life" respondents listed good neighborhoods and
safety as the two key criteria. In commenting on what
they liked most about Little Canada, residents listed a
convenient and accessible location. Residents were
then asked what they liked least about the City.
Morris felt it noteworthy that 18% indicated nothinq.
The norm in Ramsey County is 10% and dropping. Morris
pointed out that with this answer, key issues of
concern are those at the 20% levels or higher.
Anything at 5% or below do not reach the agenda. Items
liked least were high taxes at 20%, crowding at 6%,
traffic at 8%, nothing to do 7%, City government 6%.
Morris reported that the survey then asked residents to
talk about issues facing the City. The most serious
were listed as high taxes at 21%, need for development
to expand the tax base at 15%, and crime at 13%.
Morris felt that the 13% figure for crime was more
expected in a first-ring community. The intensity here
was a bit higher than expected.
Residents were asked if they considered Little Canada
as "home". 69% did, while 30% indicated that they
would be just as happy elsewhere. In identifying other
communities they would like to live, residents by and
large identified neighboring communities. 73% felt
Little Canada had an excellent to good strength of
community identity and sense of neighborliness. This
is the norm for Ramsey County. Morris also pointed out
that there is a very good general support by residents
for what is going on in the community.
2
