MINU'i'ES
CITY COUNCIL
DECII~SBER 6, 1995
Fahey directed the City Planner to begin working on the
appropriate rezonings for the Rice Street/Little Canada
Road area to ensure that the City has appropriate
controls over any development within this area.
Joe Vitale asked if the City Council would accept two
grocery stores in the area.
Fahey expressed concern about the efforts of Gary
Collyard to submarine the leasing of space to a grocery
store in the Market Place Shopping Center. Fahey
stated that he was not in favor of two grocery stores
in the immediate area when there are other uses that
make sense.
Scalze pointed out that grocery stores like to bunch
together. Scalze did not think the idea was totally
alien.
Vitale felt that Fahey was incorrect in his comments
about Collyard.
Fahey indicated that Mr. Collyard admitted at a
previous meeting that he contacted one of the grocery
chains that Grootwassink was trying to work out a lease
with.
Collyard stated that he called the individual and
talked to him about development in another town. That
individual mentioned that he was working on something
in Little Canada.
Fahey indicated that Mr. Collyard had no credibility
with him, and stated that he would scrutinize any
development proposal submitted by Mr. Collyard. Fahey
pointed out that the City has been working hard to get
redevelopment qoing in the area, and it appears Mr.
Collyard has been lobbying against those efforts.
Collyard stated that Fahey was wrong.
Morelan stated that he did not believe there was room
in Little Canada for two grocery stores. Morelan felt
that one or the other would go out-of-business, and
suggested that he would rather see some other type of
business pursued.
Fasciana asked what type of grocery store was planned
for the Market Place.
Fahey stated that he did not wish to divulge this
11
