MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 14, 1996
The foregoing ordinance was duly seconded by Scalze.
Ayes (5) Morelan, Scalze, Fahey, LaValle, Pedersen.
Nays (O). Ordinance declared adopted.
The City Administrator suggested the Council consider
passing a resolution lifting the moratorium which is in
place for the Rice Street/Little Canada Road
redevelopment district pending publication of the
rezoninq ordinances. The Administrator pointed out
that the rezonings were the last step to be completed.
Morelan suggested the City Planner comment on the
moratorium prior to Council action.
The Administrator reported that he would schedule this
item on the next Council agenda since the City Planner
will be present at that meeting.
OLD FIRE Fahey reported that prior to tonight's meeting a
STATION workshop was held at which renovation and use of the
old fire station was discussed. The long-term needs of
the Little Canada Recreation Association, Historical
Society, and Canadian Days were also discussed. Based
on the discussion at that workshop, the Council would
like to authorize a feasibility study for placement of
an addition onto City Hall to house the Historical
Society. Such an addition would allow the continued
use of the upper level of old fire hall for storage
purposes by Public Works, Canadian Days, and LCRA. The
lower level would be used for assembly purposes by
LCRA, for senior citizen recreation programs, and other
assembly opportunities. However, no formal action on
these uses will be taken until the Council has received
and reviewed the feasibility report.
Scalze pointed out that the Council has reviewed life
safety and ADA requirements in relation to the
continued use of the old fire hall.
Fahey reported that to continue the current use of the
old fire hall, the renovation including life safety and
ADA requirements would range in cost from $210,000 to
$315,000. It was the consensus of the Council that
this amount of money was too much to put into that
building. As an alternative, an addition to City Hall
for the Historical Society was discussed. This would
allow continued use of the lower level of the old fire
9
