MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 14, 1996
continue as long as the occupancy load, which is based
on square footage, is not exceeded.
Donovan pointed out that the Historical Society
periodically brings a class of school children in to
see their display area.
The Building Official replied that there may be some
issues under ADA given the numerous uses of the
building. Again, the Building Official pointed out
that occupancy loads could not be exceeded. Having
school children or others in the building to view
display areas, results in an exhibition use. This use
may require that secondary exits be installed.
Kathy Hanson pointed out that the Historical Society
would like both office space and an expanded exhibit
area.
Scalze suggested that viewing the exhibits is actually
like walking through storage.
Morelan felt the Historical Society's need for expanded
exhibit space needed to be addressed. Morelan asked if
the Historical Society could continue for a period of
time where they are while a long-term plan is being put
in place.
Fahey suggested that the long-term plan may be to find
a different location for the Historical Society. Fahey
suggested that the upstairs of the old fire hall be
used for storage purposes only, and that the downstairs
be used as it presently is by the LCRA and for some
recreation programs.
Kathy Hanson pointed out that should the Historical
Society be given the lower level of the old fire hall,
there could be no other uses in that level.
Morelan suggested a fourth option. This option would
involve repairing the roof, addressing life safety
issues with the LCRA being responsible for any kitchen
upgrades that area necessary, and using the upper level
for storage only by Public Works, Canadian Days, and
LCRA. Morelan pointed out that this option leaves the
Historical Society out in the cold. Some options for
addressing their needs include putting on an addition
to City Hall, renting space in the old Little Canada
5
