MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 10, 1996
Pedersen suggested the need to photograph the City
periodically in order to record changes which
continuously occur. Jean Donovan agreed, acknowledging
that they should especially be doing the Rice
Street/Little Canada Road area. Donovan agreed the
Historical Society must be interested in not only what
happened in 1850, but also what happened yesterday.
Donovan felt the Historical Society's immediate work is
to develop a mission statement and to incorporate.
Donovan reported that the paperwork for incorporation
is very complex, and stated the Historical Society will
likely hire an attorney to prepare these documents.
Fahey reported that he prepared the incorporation
paperwork for Canadian Days, and volunteered to do it
for the Historical Society as well. Fahey stated he
would need assistance in gathering some of the
information which will be required.
Scalze felt what the Historical Society has done in the
past is collect information, photographs, etc. Now the
time has come to exhibit this collection, and Scalze
felt that should be the focus of the group.
Donovan agreed and reported that they have all the
information they need for exhibits. Donovan reported
the Historical Society has discussed a permanent
display showing how Little Canada came into existence.
Donovan also informed the Council that the Minnesota
Historical Society has agreed to provide assistance
with exhibits.
Donovan indicated that she has some knowledge of the
County's and other cities' historical societies, and in
comparison, the Little Canada Historical Society has
done a very good job in putting together the collection
they have.
Morelan felt if the City Hall addition goes forward,
this will bring out an awareness in people and will
generate a tremendous amount of interest in the
Aistorical Society.
The Council discussed the funding the City provides to
the Historical Society. Fahey pointed out that the
relationship the City has with the Historical Society
is similar to the one it has with the Little Canada
Recreation, the Fire Department, and Canadian Days.
Morelan asked if the Historical Society was a private
organization or not.
