MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />APRTL 9, 1997 <br />Scalze reported that the Multi-Housin~ Coalition is working to get a <br />crime-free program in place, and have been waiting until Deputy <br />Wilzbacher took over his duties as crime prevention officer. <br />Wilzbacher reported that he will graduate fi•om the crime-free multi- <br />housing program tomorrow. As a result of his completing this training, he <br />will now be able to work with the Multi-Housing Coalition to begin <br />training lpartment managers and owners. <br />Scalze asked that Wilzbacl~er meet with her or the City Administrator to <br />coordinate l~is attendance at the next MulYi-I-Iousing Coalition. <br />Pedersen asked about "hot spots" in Little Canada. <br />Wilzbacher replied tliat he will be~in worl<ing with management at <br />Montreal Courts Apartments. He wiil provide the information the <br />apartment complexes are seeking to make tl~eir complexes a better place to <br />live. The information he can provide will assist managers in bringing in <br />better tenants which will upgrlde the quality of Iife at these complexes. <br />Fahey asked what Che multi-fai~~ily crime-free program will mean to Little <br />Canada residents. <br />Wilzbacher repoited that the program came about because of crime at and <br />around apartment complexes. The program involves an 8-hour class for <br />owners and apartment manlgers teaching them about screening of tenants, <br />evicting problem tenants, forming nei~hborhood watch groups, and <br />inspecting the property to determine improvements which can be made in <br />security. The bottom lii~e is getting owners and managers involved and <br />showing them what will worl<. <br />The City Admiuistrator noted die increased calls for service at Montreal <br />Courts, and stated it was his tmdeistanding in implementing neighborhood <br />watch there will Ue increlsed calls for service. He asked if this is because <br />people are more aware of issues and start reporting the things they <br />observe. <br />Wilzbacher replied that that was correct The more property owners <br />observe and report, the faster the Sheriffls Department can clean up an <br />area. <br />Morelan pointed out that calls at Montreal Courts were down in 1995 and <br />up in 1996. He asked if this was due to the Community Affairs Officers <br />patrollin~ the complex. <br />
