li'iIN~T~3
f:l'TY COUIYCIL
IVIAY S, 1997
Laurent reported that movie theater owners respect the territory of their
competition, and there are certain distance qualifications which must be
met before another theater would develop. It appears that the Little
Canada Road/Rice Street area would meet those qualifications. Moarn
reported that the new concept in theaters is stadium seating so there are no
site line problems. Statistic show that a movie-goer will pass by other
theaters to go to one with stadium selting. Size of theaters was discassed,
and Moarn anticipated that an 8-screen theater would be the right tit for
the area.
5calze asked how feasible the arena concept was given the State's funcling
oti more ice arenas.
Moarn replied that the City would want to apply for State funding for the
arena project. However, Moarn was not sure of the requirements fpr this
type of funding.
Fahey felt the location was a plus for the arena, and lack of available ice
time was acknowtedged.
Scalze questioned the affordability of the ice time. Morelan felt that the
cost of ice time would have to be competitive in order for the arena to be
successful.
Ivloarn pointed out that the arena being proposed was bright and clean
versus the dingy appearance of existing arenas.
Pedersen asked about the possibility of a dual use for the facility.
Moarn replied that the facility would have yearaound use with hockey
leagues and camps. There is the possibility of duai use with other sports.
It was pointed out that hockey has beoome a year-round sport.
Moreiln asked if all the retail shops had to be sports-related. Moarn
pointed out that in addition to the food court, retaii could inciude
businesses like Foot Locker. This type of business would be frequented by
customsrs who may not be at the arena for a hockey game.
Fasciana asked if the developers had any ideas for the south side of Little
Canada Road.
Moa~ n replied that they did not until the questions aze answered on these
tirst concepts.
