MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL AND
PARKS & RECREATION
MAY 28,1997
was publicity and also that it was very low budget. Christensen said that someone had
written in the comments how popular the outdoor music program in Roseville was.
Bianchi said that they had discussed connecting with the middie school and high school
musical groups. She said that the kids would ]ike to play pubiicly and it would not have to
cost anything. Scalze asked if they have structured music programs during the summer
months. Bianchi replied that some do have summer sessions, but concerts could be
scheduled in late spring and early fall also. The Director asked if they play any local
public venues, such as Central Park in Roseville. Bianchi said that they just played at the
zoo, and Johnson said that they performed at the grade schools. Bianchi said that there
were also kids that had their own band and wanted a place to play. Morelan said he
thought that the Commission should pursue it.
Ables said that the Roseville Area Arts Council, on which she serves, will be sponsoring
events such as this. She said that they are working on refurbishing the theater in the
middle school to be used as a community theater, and that there will be more summer
events planned through the Arts Council. Ables also said that the Arts Council will be
holding fundraisers, and hopefully the City of Little Canada could put one on. The
Directar said that the Arts Council could offer support with publicity and performer
contacts for the Concerts in the Parks.
The Director said that the first obstacle to overcome would be funding. Johnson asked
about concessions as a possibility. Scalze asked if the Commission would like to plan
something for after the next newsletter comes out. Johnson suggested possibly after
Canadian Days, so they could advertise it there also, and possibly utilize the new shelter at
Spooner Park.
Scalze mentioned that it could take some time to get the program started, and that it took
Roseville some time even with a very visible location. Christensen said that they also have
some concerts that are still poorly attended, such as the three and four piece groups.
Johnson suggested discussing it at the next Commission meeting. Ables said that they
should concentrate on the funding. Scalze said that they could discuss it next budget time
also.
Johnson said that the survey also showed an interest in arts and crafts classes and a nature
center program, and the Commission was wondering about facilities for these things in the
parks such as a nature center or community room. Scalze said that they have the lower
level of the Old Fire Hall for meeting space. Johnson mentioned that there were some
volunteers on the surveys, and the Commission should follow up with them.
Johnson said she also wanted to bring up the interest in sand volleyball on the survey,
because the City does not offer much for young adults ages 19 to 30. She said that the
court was there and she thought they should look into encouraging its use. Christensen
suggested incorporating items such as these into the newsletter, letting residents know
what is available through the parks and recreation system.
