MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 2G, 1997
maintain a bocce ball court which is located on private property versus
constructing a new court within one of the City's parks.
LaValle pointed out that there is an existing bocce ball court at Garden
Terrace that is being used by senior citizens. This court is bein~ used and
is in need of maintenance.
Scalze suggested that if the City is spending money for maintenance, it
should be a court on City property. Scalze felt that big share of costs
associated with bocce ball courts were for maintenance rather than
construction.
LaValle felt it would be more economical for City employees to maintain
courts that are located within City parks rather than maintaining a court
that is off-site.
Fahey pointed out that the City has facilities they maintain on School
District property.
It was pointed out that the City previously had bocce ball courts within
Spooner Park. These courts were removed due to lack of use. Scalze
indicated that the old courts were not in a good location, and suggested
that a court should be constructed within one of the parks and that that
court should be accessible to a parking lot.
LaValle suggested that the number of seniors playing bocce ball is
growing and that a second court would be used.
The Administrator suggested that the Council obtain comments from the
Parks & Recreation Commission on the issue. The Administrator
suggested that if the City is maintaining a court on private property, there
should be a lease agreement in place to protect the City from a liability
standpoint.
Scalze pointed out that Garden Terrace may be agreeable to senior citizens
using their court, but suggested that they mi~ht not be as agreeable if
teenagers were interested in using it.
Fahey suggested the matter be referred to the Parks & Recreation
Commission for additional comment, and then back to the Council.
12
