MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY ll, 1998
that staff inspect the tables and chairs and replace what is necessary.
LaValle suggested that it may not be necessary to replace all the tables and
chairs at once.
Morelan suggested that there should be a reduced rental fee for rentals of
two hours or less, and reviewed some spreadsheet analysis which projects
revenues based on varying numbers of rentals and varying fixed costs.
Morelan suggested that a reduced fee for shorter rental periods may make
the building more affordable to some users, thus increasing the number of
rentals.
The Deputy Clerk estimated fixed costs of $31 per rental of the Old Fire
Hall.
Morelan stated that he would favor a rental fee of $35 to $40 for a rental
of two hours of less.
Fahey sug~ested that the Council first act on the continued rental of the
Old Fire Hall and equipment purchases, and then consider the issue of the
shorter rental period.
Mr. Fahey introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOI. UTION NO. 98-2-30 - APPROVING THE CONTINUED
RENTAI, OF THE OI.D FIRE HAI.I. AND A UTHORIZING STAFF
TO PROCEED WITH THE PAVING OF THE PARKING I.OT AT
THE Ol D FIRE HALL A.S WEI.I, AS THE REPI,ACEMENT OF
T,9I3I.ES AND CHAIRS AS STAFF DETERMINES NECESSARY
The foregoin~; resolution was duly seconded by LaValle.
Ayes (5) Fahey, LaValle, Morelan, Scalze, Pedersen.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
Fahey raised the issue of policing rentals of 2 hours or less to ensure that
the renters are not actually occupying the building for lon~er periods of
time and taking advantage of a lower rental rate. Morelan stated that this
would be an enforcement issue.
Morelan stated that his purpose in suggesting the lower rental rate is to
provide for more use of the building. Morelan felt a$40 fee for a two-
hour rental would encourage more people to use the building.
The Deputy Clerk reported that the issue came up because of a request
made by a stay-at-home-mothers' group which is looking for some space
